Frontline Consulting believe that councillors need to represent their communities and be representative of those communities. The typical councillor is still white, male and in his late 50s. While there is nothing wrong with them being councillors, other sections of the community must be better represented.

We encourage more women to go into local government (currently only one third of councillors are women) and into the leadership of councils (in the 2008/9 municipal year only 15.7% of council leaders were women and 20.1% of deputy leaders. Source: Centre for Women and Democracy).

We:

  • facilitate campaigns, seminars and forums to help with recruitment to boost diversity
  • use role models to coach or mentor potential candidates, councillors and those who are new to leadership
  • hold tailored events for women councillors, black and Asian councillors, and younger councillors
  • organise and support networks of women, black and Asian and/or younger councillors.
