The Political Assistant is a bridge between the locally elected representatives and the officers, and needs to secure the trust of both to ensure the effectiveness of her/his group and the smooth passage of council business. The job combines the roles of policy advisor, press officer, researcher, caseworker, counsellor and, in some cases, surrogate councillor. In practice the role varies according to local political culture and whether or not the group is in administration or opposition.
Frontline Consulting is able to offer induction courses, seminars and mentoring for Political Assistants, covering local government law, local government history, political management, comparative voting systems, communications, political publicity, equal opportunities and time management.
